Description: The program is designed to give the student a fundamental knowledge of audio as it applies to the process of recording, mixing and editing music and spoken word and the reinforcement of sound in live productions.

Objective: Upon successful completion, the student will have the entry-level skills to identify basic electronic signal flow as it applies to audio equipment and skills for:

  • Selection and use of microphones
  • Operation of microphone mixers, recording and sound reinforcement mixers an audio/visual signal routers
  • Operating signal processing devices
  • Operating analog and digital audio recorders
  • Operating computer based recording systems
  • Basic synthesizer interface and operation

Course Listing (click the course name for a description):
  • Course 1: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing
    • 36 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None
As part of the overall training in Recording and Sound Engineering, students must have a fundamental understanding of the physics of sound and how the human ear processes it. This course will also provide the basis for students to understand the structure of the recording process.
  • Course 2: Recording and Acoustics
    • 71 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing and Digital Audio Recording - Including Introduction to Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)
As part of the overall training in Recording and Sound Engineering, this course will build upon the fundamentals presented in Course One and further the student understanding of the audio chain. More emphasis will be placed on the equipment used and the student will then use that knowledge in labs to the practical applications of using recording and audio processing equipment.
  • Course 3: Digital Audio Recording (Including Introduction to MIDI)
    • 36 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing
This course focuses on the fundamentals of Digital Audio and its impact on the distribution and recording of audio. Also covered is the impact of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) in the professional recording environment.
  • Course 4: Live Sound and Event Production
    • 44 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing, Digital Audio Technology (Including Introduction to MIDI), Recording Engineering and Acoustics
This course is designed to give the student a fundamental knowledge of audio recording and sound engineering as it applies to the process of recording, mixing and editing music and spoken word and the reinforcement of sound in live productions. This course is an opportunity to review the fundamentals of the physics of sound and sound transducers and then relate that information to their applications in live sound and event productions.
  • Course 5: Practical Recording Techniques
    • 54 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing, Digital Audio Technology (Including Introduction to MIDI), Recording Engineering and Acoustics, Live Sound and Event Production
As part of the overall training in Recording and Sound Engineering, this course will reinforce the concepts of applying standard business practices to the Recording and Sound Engineering industry and give the students intense and extensive practical experience in utilizing a variety of audio equipment. The forty-eight hours of lab work provide ample opportunity for students to hone their skills in a wide range of engineering situations.
  • Course 6: Business Communications/Audio CD Portfolio Development
    • 72 Clock Hour Prerequisites: Audio Fundamentals - Sound and Hearing, Digital Audio Technology (Including Introduction to MIDI), Recording and Acoustics, Live Sound and Event Production. Practical Recording Techniques
As part of the overall training in Recording and Sound Technology, the Business Communications/Audio CD Portfolio Development course is designed to help students effectively communicate their skill sets to potential employers in today's workplace. They will understand how to design and create a professional resume with a cover letter. They will also review what their new skills are, how to research and market themselves to potential employers, as well as how to use industry database listings to find jobs.

A significant portion of this course is in labs where the student will refine the skills learned in the previous courses. Students will culminate their training by then creating a professional Audio CD Portfolio of their work.
